Firstly, figuring out the type of grain in your wood is essential before deciding on what type of redwood to use. For example, this grand redwood piece can be used for nearly anything; including a fireplace mantel or a decorative shelf. This mantelpiece shows darkened knots with consistent, curl grain pattern through the length.

To explain, curl grain is formed through compression in redwood burls. It is frequently present in our redwood pieces. It often is referred to “tiger stripes” in wood. Of course, this grain is not visible from the outside of the burl. So, when we slab up redwood burls, we find beautiful curl grain in the wood. In the case that you are looking for a curl grain mantelpiece, we have plenty more in stock. Let us know what dimensions and project you are pursuing and we will gladly help with your mantel search!
