Eleanor & Shane’s Redwood Adventure

A Redwood Adventure: From Eureka to Colorado

For California native Eleanor and her husband Shane, a recent road trip along the Oregon and California coast was more than just a chance to visit friends and family, it was an opportunity to bring a piece of their past into their Colorado home.

Growing up camping among the majestic redwoods, Eleanor has always been captivated by the unique character of redwood burls. When the couple planned their journey, they decided to make a stop in Eureka, California, to visit Redwood Burl, Inc., owned by craftsman Landon Buck.

Armed with a template, they contacted Landon in advance. Upon arrival, they were greeted with several stunning redwood burl slabs to choose from. They selected a piece to replace their bar top and, inspired by the match, picked a second slab to transform their fireplace mantel. Loading their treasures into their truck, the couple embarked on an adventurous drive back to Colorado.

After receiving template specifications, Landon shared photos and descriptions to ensure the slabs met their vision, which favored the irregular, gnarled charm of redwood and live-edge. The couple’s template reflected their thoughtful design, prioritizing an arch for counter access while preserving the live edge.

After their visit, the couple emailed with enthusiasm about their haul, asking for advice on acclimating the slabs. They wondered about the best setup (using 2x4s, blankets, or cardboard) and how long to wait.

After acclimating the wood to the dry climate, they followed Landon’s advice to apply a matte polyurethane finish. The result? A beautifully finished bar top and mantel that reflect the natural beauty of the redwoods. The couple’s journey not only connected them to Sarah’s roots but also added a touch of rustic elegance to their home.

These photos showcase their finished and mounted masterpieces: a rustic bar top with a live-edge finish and a striking fireplace mantel set against a stone wall.

We celebrate this talented duo, their craftsmanship, and the beauty of their finished redwood selections.
