What You Need to Know

This page answers some “What You Need to Know” questions when you are purchasing redwood or other wood products from us.

About Salvage Wood

Salvage wood tends to have ‘defects’ such as small cracks (checking), knots, and curly or burly grain. This character adds to the rustic appeal and value of the wood. If you require a perfect, defect-free piece they are available but not common, please let us know.

What is a “Live Edge”?

A “live” edge is the natural edge of the tree with the bark removed. People often desire this look in rustic design. In many cases a buyer will need a specific size for their project. Unfortunately, nature doesn’t usually create the exact size you need. In these cases our experienced staff can shape and manipulate the wood in almost any way. From custom carved edges to a straight cut modern look, we can do it all.

We offer our products anywhere from unfinished – to fully finished – and anywhere in between. Additionally, we finish our mantels with a wipe-on Danish oil. This is is a matte finish that highlights the color and character of the wood nicely. We suggest occasional maintenance of applying more oil when it appears to look “dry”. Please see our Installation & Care section under our fireplace mantels for more information. If you require a different finish, please let us know. Our larger products, like dining tables and counter tops, are finished by professionals. We build them with a protective finish designed for your specific use and sheen preference.
